John Corbett stands as the founding father and "Grand Old Man" of Wyoming Athletics, leaving an indelible mark on the University of Wyoming that has lasted across UW’s campus to this day. Corbett was a Harvard University graduate who lettered in both basketball and football. Corbett brought his athletic knowledge and leadership skills to Wyoming in 1914, blazing a trail that led to a respected and distinguished 25-year career that would transform the University of Wyoming's athletic program.
During his tenure until his retirement in 1939, Corbett's influence extended across multiple sports. He coached basketball, football, baseball, and track and field. This proved to display an admirable versatility that inspired excellence and passions in his teams. His vision reached beyond the playing field and the sports that he coached. His love for basketball and competitive prowess founded the Wyoming State Basketball Tournament, creating a lasting tradition that brought high school athletes from across the state together in unison.
Corbett's administrative and leadership abilities matched those of his coaching career. Rising to become the Director of Athletics and Physical Education at UW, he oversaw the development of the university's first dedicated athletic facilities. Under his guidance, Half Acre Gym was constructed, and he established the football field that would bear his name, Corbett Field, which served as home to Wyoming football until War Memorial Stadium replaced it in 1950.
The John Corbett Building remains a historic landmark on campus, now serving as home to the University of Wyoming's swimming and diving teams, and a prominent academic facility for Health and Science students. John Corbett's athletic and educational spirit continues to shape Wyoming Athletics today through his legacy and memory.
